Get In TouchWhat to Wear for a Successful Cryotherapy Session
Cryotherapy uses controlled exposure to very cold temperatures to support recovery, reduce the sensation of muscle soreness, and help many athletes feel refreshed after training. Clothing plays an important role because the right layers protect sensitive areas while allowing the treatment to work as intended.
Preparation is simple, but small details matter. Your clothing should be clean, completely dry, comfortable, and free from materials that could become uncomfortable in extreme cold. The exact requirements can vary between a whole-body cryotherapy chamber and a localized treatment, so follow the instructions provided by the facility staff.
At The Factory D1 Indy, athletes and active community members can pair training with wellness and recovery services. Arriving dressed appropriately helps you spend less time adjusting your gear and more time focusing on a safe, efficient session.
Choose Dry, Breathable Base Layers
For whole-body cryotherapy, wear minimal, dry clothing that sits comfortably against your skin. Cotton underwear is commonly recommended because it is breathable and less likely to trap moisture than some synthetic fabrics. Men may be asked to wear cotton briefs, while women may choose cotton underwear and a bra or sports bra.
Avoid entering the chamber in damp athletic clothing after a workout. Sweat and moisture can make the cold feel harsher and may increase the risk of skin irritation. If you are coming directly from basketball practice, cycling, or strength training, bring a fresh change of clothes rather than relying on the outfit you wore during exercise.
Loose or bulky garments are usually unnecessary. The goal is to protect private and sensitive areas without covering the entire body in heavy layers. Follow the provider’s instructions about how much skin should be exposed during the session.
Protect Hands, Feet, and Sensitive Areas
Extremities need special attention because fingers, toes, and other delicate areas can react quickly to very low temperatures. Most facilities provide protective gloves, socks, slippers, or similar equipment, but you should confirm what is included before your appointment.
Wear clean, dry cotton socks unless the facility supplies a different option. Some providers recommend two pairs to add insulation, while others prefer a specific thickness so protective footwear fits correctly. Do not use wet socks, compression socks that are difficult to remove, or footwear with exposed metal parts.
Protective gloves are generally used to shield the hands, and men may need additional coverage for sensitive areas. If the provider supplies a robe, towel, headband, or other protective item, use it as directed. Do not substitute plastic bags, improvised wraps, or heavily insulated clothing without staff approval.
Leave Jewelry and Moist Products at Home
Remove watches, rings, bracelets, necklaces, piercings that can be removed safely, and other metal accessories before treatment. Metal can become extremely cold and may cause discomfort or skin injury. Hair accessories with metal pieces should also be taken off whenever possible.
Your skin should be clean and dry. Avoid applying lotion, body oil, petroleum jelly, perfume, or other topical products immediately before cryotherapy unless the provider specifically recommends one. These substances may affect how the skin responds to the cold and can interfere with the facility’s preparation guidelines.
Cosmetics and hair products are usually less important than metal and moisture, but a simple routine is best. Arrive with dry hair, dry skin, and no recently applied oils. Contact lenses may also be uncomfortable in cold, dry air, so ask the staff whether they should be removed for your particular treatment.
| Clothing or Item | Recommended Choice | What to Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Underwear | Clean, dry cotton underwear | Damp or heavily synthetic garments |
| Bra or sports bra | A comfortable cotton or simple athletic option | Metal underwire or decorative hardware |

| Hand protection | Gloves supplied or approved by the provider | Bare hands or improvised plastic coverings |
| Jewelry | Remove all metal accessories | Rings, watches, necklaces, and metal piercings |
| Skin products | Clean, dry skin | Lotion, oil, petroleum products, and perfume |
| Outer layer | Robe or covering provided by staff | Bulky clothing that has not been approved |
Dress Differently for Localized Treatments
Localized cryotherapy uses a small applicator or targeted device on a particular area, such as a knee, shoulder, calf, or lower back. Clothing choices can therefore be more flexible than they are for whole-body exposure. Wear loose athletic shorts, a tank top, or a garment that allows the treatment area to be reached without excessive pulling or stretching.
The treated skin still needs to be dry and free from lotions or oils. If you are receiving treatment on a joint or muscle covered by tight clothing, choose an outfit that can be adjusted comfortably. Zippers, snaps, and rough seams should not press against the treatment area.
Bring an extra layer for after the appointment. The targeted area may feel cold or numb temporarily, and a sweatshirt, sweatpants, or warm socks can make the transition more comfortable. This is especially useful when traveling outdoors after a session.
Prepare for Comfort Before and After
Cryotherapy sessions are brief, but comfort begins before you enter the treatment area. Avoid arriving overheated from intense exercise. Allow time to cool down, change into dry clothing, and complete any required screening or consent forms. A calm transition helps staff assess whether you are ready for treatment.
Many people prefer loose athletic clothing for the rest of the appointment. Soft joggers, a clean T-shirt, and warm socks provide an easy post-session outfit without compressing the skin. Bring a coat appropriate for the weather, since the immediate outdoor environment may feel especially cold after treatment.
Hydration is also part of practical preparation. Drink water according to your normal needs, but do not treat cryotherapy as a substitute for medical care, rest, or recovery planning. Tell staff about relevant health conditions, unusual sensitivity to cold, skin problems, or any concern that may affect your session.
Match Your Outfit to the Facility Rules
Every cryotherapy provider has its own procedures. Some supply all protective clothing, while others expect clients to bring cotton underwear, socks, or specific accessories. Before arriving, review the appointment instructions or contact the facility to confirm what you should wear and what will be provided.
If you are visiting a multi-purpose training center after a league game, skills session, or spin class, pack a dedicated cryotherapy kit. A small bag can include dry cotton underwear, approved socks, a clean shirt, warm joggers, a sweatshirt, and a towel. Keeping these items separate from sweaty training gear reduces the chance of entering treatment damp.
A successful session also depends on following staff directions during the treatment. Stand as instructed, keep protective areas covered, and report burning, intense discomfort, dizziness, or unusual skin sensations immediately. Cold exposure should feel intense but controlled, never painful or alarming.
Pack These Essentials for Every Visit
A simple recovery bag makes it easier to follow clothing guidelines consistently. Keep the contents clean, dry, and ready to use:
- Fresh cotton underwear or other provider-approved base layers
- Clean, dry socks and any required protective footwear
- A comfortable sports bra or non-metal athletic top, when appropriate
- Loose warm clothing for after the session
- A coat, hat, or additional outdoor layer in cold weather
Avoid packing jewelry, oily skin products, wet workout clothes, or garments with exposed metal. If the facility supplies gloves, slippers, robes, or other protective equipment, use those items rather than bringing alternatives that have not been approved.
Planning your outfit around dryness, simplicity, and easy access to the treatment area can make cryotherapy more comfortable and efficient. Schedule the session with enough time to cool down after exercise, change clothes, complete the facility’s screening process, and leave warmly dressed. Book your recovery visit at The Factory D1 Indy and arrive prepared to make the most of your time there.
